We finished.

Amid an August full moon night, I lay alone on the couch, eyes fixed wide to the ceiling in fear. Sleep wasn’t interested. My hand bounced, powered by the unwelcomed adrenalin that coursed through my veins. We’d just sold the book, and now, we had to finish. Finish. Finish. Just finish. I’ve finished things in my life – college, culinary school, relationships, leases, jobs, projects . . . why was this so raw and different? Why did I feel that it might literally kill me?
Deep within the center of a tightly wound ball of banded dreams sat a vulnerable core, precisely where this goal lived. Its center rested like a baby whose arms jabbed my personal hopes, fears and dreams without concern. I felt exposed. I couldn’t pass my responsibility, or even be slightly shielded by it. I must continue to manage a growing farm with my husband, while finding a way to fit in all the millions of details that come with finishing a book. It felt expansive, and I felt very, very . . . small.
That scared girl probably wouldn’t have listened even if I had tried to assure her it was going to be OK. And, it was. One foot in front of the other allowed things to fall as designed. Our commitment created space. The book is now finished. It feels like it has always been here, and yet, new. When I glance at it, it perks me up and keeps me on the toes of further dreams. I’m ever grateful or the trusting and supportive relationship that developed with my mother as a result of this creative process, and I thank my husband for his amazing art, which raised the book to another level.
We can’t wait to share it with you, and you can now Pre-Order on Organic Spark. The book will begin shipping on March 1.
In the meantime, here’s a delicious and simple Kefir Strawberry Ice that might hit the spot for Valentine’s Day.
Celebrate and stay healthy with Kefir Strawberry Ice for your Valentine this year!

I am adventuring myself through this beautiful book.
The Chicken Liver Pate was the first one! Then came the Zucchini Soup, the Multi-Seed Cracker, then the Roasted Shrimp Salsa. I like the expectation of .. what will be next.Thank you for this book!

Ever since you made sand dollar Christmas ornaments with Jessie Sloan and sold them in the subdivision, you have been growing. You keep venturing into areas of unknown and making it happen. I am not surprised by the quality and completeness of this last venture and await your next. I love you, Scootch.

Just picked up the book today at Farmshop; we have been eating your eggs for a couple of months now. I am so happy to see a modern Sallly-Fallonesque book, complete with photos and stories. My husband and I are gradually shifting back to grains after discovering Red Bread Cafe in Culver City . . . and the wonders of wild yeasted sourdough, fermented foods, raw dairy, etc. I almost wept with joy over the sourdough starter recipe!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been slogging my way through Tartine No. 3 with the wettest most uncooperative doughs and no-starter starters . . . I CANNOT WAIT to try kombucha in my starter!!!!!!!! We will have to make a visit to the farm soon . . . congratulations on the beautiful book and please keep up the good work!!!
